Resurgent Daniil Medvedev Secures Maiden Title in Over Two Years
19 of the Russian's 21 championships have been earned on hard surfaces
A resurgent Medvedev won his first championship for nearly 30 months with a win over Corentin Moutet in the Almaty Open championship match.
The athlete, a ex- number one, has endured a torrid period, managing just one match at the major tournaments and undergoing a setback at the American major.
Medvedev's varied form on the tennis tour - and issues with his serving in especial - led to him dropping out of the top ten and finally splitting with long-term mentor Gilles Cervara.
Currently collaborating with Thomas Johansson and his other coach, he has steadily improved in the recent weeks - climaxing in a hard-fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 win over opponent Moutet.
This marks Medvedev's initial trophy since the 2023 Rome Masters and initial on a hard surface from spring of 2023.
Victory also signifies Medvedev has secured 21 victories at 21 distinct events.
"For the first time I am participating in a tournament with my children at once, so to win a title is really nice," said ranked player the champion.
"This victory is in honour of my younger daughter her name, because the first title I won when my first daughter my daughter was born was for her."
The athlete, the former major winner, had been defeated in his past six finals, including in that event earlier this year.
The player's retrieving strategy and recurring emotional displays on court had caused commentators to doubt if his capacity to perform at the highest level was over.
However the 29-year-old has altered his approach in the last few weeks, making an effort to approach the net and perform positively, backed up by an enhanced service.
The champion recovered from a deficit in the opening set against the tricky opponent, securing four of the concluding five exchanges to take the lead.
The pair traded breaks in the middle set before the challenger, bidding for his maiden tour championship, gained dominance to force a decider.
The opponent saved four early-game chances in a close deciding set before the Russian secured a break to 15 to serve for the match.
Fittingly, Medvedev earned victory with a shot at the net area, with his opponent failing to manage a shot after a lengthy match.
